8/30 HW/Review

Scholars!  Your homework this weekend is to begin working on your mini-project which we began in class today. You chose to do either a poster describing how you have been socialized according to one of your identities, or a powerpoint describing how three internet ads socialize their audience.  You can find the handouts describing those options on the class handouts page under "9/30", both pages are on the link if you scroll down.
DUE Dates:  Your roughdraft for your option of this project is due by the end of class on Tuesday.  You will have half of the class period Tuesday to work on it, but you should spend some time over this weekend getting a good start.  Your FINAL DRAFT is due Wednesday first thing.  I will randomly ask three students to present to the class, so be prepared.

Tip:  Here is an awesome link to a sociology blog.  It is a good additional resource if you want to learn more about sociology as a discipline that affects all areas of our lives.

Review:  Today we
--had a talk from Rachael Sands about college advising,
--took a quiz on the Socialization lecture
--Reviewed the Learning Goals sheet, heard example of how Matt was socialized as a male and walked through the Cycle of Socialization progression
--Did a starter exploring if we were Agents or Targets according to our seven social identities
--Began working on our projects.
Happy Labor Day!  Don't forget, we don't have school on Monday.

8/29 HW/Review

Hi scholars!
A reminder that we have a quiz tomorrow on the topics we have covered so far. To prepare, review your sociology lecture notes that you took during the slideshow these past two days.  If you need to see the slideshow again, you can find it here.  You should know basic terms, including the elements of culture, the different types of norms, what sanctions are, and subcultures and countercultures.  It will be a short quiz, only fifteen minutes, unless you have spoken to me and ESS and have gotten permission for extra time.
Tomorrow we will:
--Hear a quick talk from Rachael Sands who guides you in the college admissions project (she is doing this with all Humanities classes this and next week)
--Take the quiz
--Do a starter (#3) on agent and target groups
--Review the learning goals sheet.  I know there was some confusion about the concepts in this handout today, so we will review everything together to make sure we are on the same page.
--Begin a mini-project; you will have a choice of either doing a poster or a powerpoint. You'll learn more about these options tomorrow.

Thank you for your hard work. These texts and concepts can be confusing and challenging, and confusion is an essential step in the learning process.  If you're not confused at some point, you're not challenging yourself.  Hopefully we will clear up some of that confusion tomorrow.  Keep it up :)

8/28; HW/ Review

Scholars!
If you missed yesterday or today's lecture, you can find it here . View it and fill in the blanks on your sociology lecture notes handout.  This would also be good for you to review for our quiz on Friday. It is also listed under class handouts as "Sociology Lecture".
Visual learners, there is a special handout I just uploaded under "class handouts" for you to look at.  It is a good image of all of the terms we have been learning.
Your homework for tonight is to read your Cycles of Socialization reading and annotate it.  Because of the heavy reading load, I'm going to give us all 15 minutes tomorrow to finish the reading in class first thing.
If your beautiful work paragraph was not in your folder today, it means I did not receive it and it is late (automatically 50% off).  Get it to me as soon as you can.
See you tomorrow!  Have a good night.-matt

8/27 HW/Review

Humanities Scholars,
Your homework tonight is to finish reading and annotating the "Cultural Diversity" handout that I handed out in class today, all the way to page 69 (the last page of the handout).  Tomorrow we will be:

1.  Going over the reading and answering any questions you may have, and having time to check in with Matt if you want to do a Challenge Extension for the Socialization project.
2.  Quickly reviewing the content from yesterday's lecture.
3.  Learning about what happens when a human grows up without human society and watching a video about children who grow up in the wild.
4.  Finishing the lecture on sociology.
And perhaps one or two other activities, depending on time constraints.

We will have a quiz on the content from today and tomorrow on Friday.  You'll have more information about this quiz tomorrow.

ATTN:  If you have missed class this week, it is your responsibility to look at previous posts to find out your homework, and to turn it in.  Your learning manifesto paragraphs will be waiting for you to pick up and see my comments in your folders tomorrow.
That's all!  Have a good night!-matt

8/26 HW/Review

Tuesday Homework
Hi folks, sorry for not posting this earlier in the evening--your homework is listed as 9/27 under "Class Handouts".  You can either print it out and complete it, or if you don't have a printer, go ahead and answer the questions on a separate piece of paper.

In case you want to review, today we
1.  Finished our learning styles posters (yeah!)
2.  Discussed the meaning of "life's work" and "best self" in small groups.
3.  Had a fishbowl seminar on these topics.

Tomorrow we will display our learning style posters, and begin our Socialization project full-on.  Expect a lesson on how to annotate at Animas, a lecture on Socialization with note-taking, and some in-class reading time in case we finish early.  See you then!-matt

8/23 HW/Review

Humanities Scholars,
We are off to a great start!  We've had lots of energy, thoughtfulness, and participation these first few days.  Your homework for Monday August 26th is to complete your Manifesto about Beautiful Work.  This is a paragraph in which you explain why Beautiful Work is important in your education at Animas and why it is relevant to the rest of your life.  You received a handout describing the assignment in class, and a copy is posted as "Beautiful Work Manifesto Assignment" under our class handouts page.  Check it to make sure you follow all the directions. For this and all other homework, please print out or handwrite your homework and physically bring it to class, unless otherwise specified.  Do not email it unless asked.  Thanks!

In case you want to review what we did today (Friday) we:
     1.  Did a rough draft of our learning style poster
     2.  Did our first peer-graded seminar of the year (yes!), discussing the Beautiful Work reading
     3.  Worked on our final drafts of our learning style poster.

On Monday, we will finish our posters, discuss our homework assignment, and then begin our first major unit of the year, called "Socialization and Identity".  You will learn more about this project on Monday.
    Have a great weekend! ~Matt

8/22 HW and Review

Hey folks,
Welcome to our class DP! You should be checking this daily to make sure you understand our homework, or if you miss class and need to know what we did.

HW due tomorrow:
Read "Beautiful Work" (found on the class handouts sections of this site.)  If you have a printer, print out the article and underline sentences you find interesting.  If you do not have a printer, write down one or two sentences describing your reaction to the article.

Today we:
-- Went over any questions you may have had about the syllabus.
--Did skits about the class code (Be Here Now, Speak the Truth, Risk It)
--Reviewed the concept of multiple intelligences/learning styles and journaled about how you will use your
strengths as revealed by the multiple intelligence test.
--Shared strategies about how to do well in Humanities depending on our learning styles.
--Had an agree/disagree discussion about society's effects on the individual, especially on gender roles. This discussion will tie into our upcoming Socialization project, which we will begin next week.

Our first Friday Funday is tomorrow!  We will do a mini-poster project about our learning styles, learn how to annotate (mark a text), and to have our first Socratic Seminar (I'll explain tomorrow!)  Don't forget that you MUST HAVE a binder with the required dividers by Monday.
See you then-Matt

Sunday, August 4, 2013

Welcome!

Welcome to 9th Grade Humanities at Animas High School!  On our first day of class, you will be completing a list of activities and tasks to orient you to the nuts and bolts of how our classroom operates.  Below I have listed an initial outline of how that first day will look.
Please also take look at the syllabus (listed above in the navigation bar).  Any handouts you receive in class will also be posted on this website under the "class handouts" bar, and all homework assignments will be posted in the form below, daily.

A fundamental expectation of this class is that you (the student) advocate for your needs.  Please see me in person or send me an email if anything on this website is unclear.
Looking forward to meeting you! -Matt

What we will do on our first day of class:

--Seating arrangements (organize yourselves in order of birthdays)
--Class Activities list.  This will take up most of our class time.  You will complete a checklist of activities, from giving me your email address to creating a system of turning in and receiving homework, to learning more about your classmates.
--Close with game.

Homework to be completed and turned by 8/22/13:

1. Read the syllabus with your parents/guardians.  Have both student and parents/guardians sign and date the last page.  List any extra information you would like to me know at the bottom of the last page.  Turn in the last page with the signatures in class tomorrow.

2.  Complete the Multiple Intelligences test and score it using the directions at the bottom of the sheet.  Bring a hard copy to class tomorrow.
