10/30 HW/Review

NO HW tonight, as we covered all the reading in class :)
REMINDER:  Romeo/Juliet film viewing is postponed to 2nd semester...more information to come after winter break

Today we:
--Read and annotated in class to page 45
--Discussed how Brave New World Society defines happiness...in short, discovered that they understand happiness to be "instant gratification"
--Watched Daniel Gilbert's Ted Talk and took notes on his conflicting notion of happiness.

www.ted.com/talks/dan_gilbert_asks_why_are_we_happy.html

--In short, Gilbert defines two types of happiness--the first, 'natural happines' is the same as the instant gratification that BNW society values.
--The 2nd type of happiness Gilbert lays out is "synthetic" happiness; which occurs when people don't get what they want, but manage to feel better about the outcome in any case.
-Most shocking example--a man who was unjustly jailed for 38 years called it "a glorious experience...I don't regret a moment of it".

--Dialectical journals and discussions on Gilbert's quote that "Emotion is a compass...and if a compass is set on north, it is worthless."

--What about you?  Would you exchange your freedom, as the citizens in Brave New World, for instant gratification?
Or do you agree with Gilbert that life is meaningful only when we go through the ups and downs of life?

-Shared our group reflection in a large group

-Watched videos on Henry Ford's assembly line and noted and discussed similarities between Ford and Brave New World
-Read and annotated together.

10/28 HW/Review

HW tonight:  Read and annotate Brave New World to page 18.

Update:
--If you download the new Windows 8.1 AT HOME (not at school, it takes too long), then you will be able to get internet wifi at school.
--In case you're wondering why more recent grades have not been posted on powerschool, there's been school-wide issues with Powerschool and my system is still not back up and operating.  Apologies for the delay.

Review of class:
--Paper airplane assembly line
--Individual paper airplane making time
--Discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of each system.

Assembly line benefits= increased production and efficiency, uniformity, and simple, easy work
Assembly line drawbacks=little creativity, mediocre product, no room for genius

Individual assembly benefits=room for great achievement and innovation, superior product at times
Individual assembly drawbacks=some products were total failures, lack of structure could be confusing
                                                    or boring for some individuals.

The trip to watch Romeo and Juliet has changed to Saturday afternoon.  More details on the exact time to come once I get a group rate from the theater.

10/4 HW/Review

Your Homework this weekend is to
a. Finish the revisions based off the feedback you received from my comments and grading rubric, and also any ideas/suggestions from your mini-lesson
b.  Print out a hard copy and turn it in along with the completed "Essay Checklist" stapled to the front of the hard copy.  This is due first thing Monday morning in class.

Today we:
 - Had independent worktime/small group lessons on refining topic sentences
-Researched in small groups different questions the basic facts about the Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare"), and how the ACA is related to the federal government's shut-down.  We strove for FACTS not opinions in presenting our research to the other groups.

10/3 HW/Review

Scholars,
HW tonight is to continue the revision process.  Make sure you are citing your sources correctly.  To check how to do so, visit the Class Handouts page and see "How To Cite".  I have modified the schedule slightly--you will be bringing a fresh hard copy of your revised paper to class on Monday.  Tomorrow I will give you a checklist of items that you need to have completed to have a complete essay for you to use over the weekend.
See you tomorrow for Friday Funday!

9/27 Review/HW

Scholars, Artists, Citizens:  This weekend, your challenge is to
A.  Enjoy the long weekend and do something FUN! Whether it be cruising on a mountainbike, reading a great book, programming, or any of the many talents that you have, I hope you take advantage to renew yourself and have fun with friends and family.

You should also, in the midst of that fun,  read "Mexican WhiteBoy" to page 114.  You will get my feedback and assessment of your rough drafts on Tuesday.  I am grading this rough draft only for whether or not your essay was turned in on time.  That will be worth ten points.  If it was turned in late, you will receive five points.  You will receive a rubric with my comments and the grade that you would have received if it were a final draft so you will know how to improve for your next draft.

If you'd like to know more about the rationale behind not giving graded feedback for the first draft, see the quote below.  Many other Animas teachers follow a similar rationale in not giving graded feedback for the rough draft.

"Assessment of any kind should not be overdone. Getting students to become preoccupied with how they are doing can undermine their interest in what they are doing. An excessive concern with performance can erode curiosity -- and, paradoxically, reduce the quality of performance. Performance-obsessed students also tend to avoid difficult tasks so they can escape a negative evaluation. "--Alfie Kohn

See this link to read the full article. While I don't agree with Kohn that grades should be thrown out all-together, I do agree with the concept that drafts should not be graded the first time around.  We want you to be thinking more about doing your best and pushing yourself to risk and try new and innovative methods, rather than trying only for the standard and
"just enough" to get a grade you're happy with.

9/25 HW/Review

Hello scholars!  Your HW for tonight, as you should know, is:
--Finish your Rough Draft of your Mask essay
--Bring a hard copy to class tomorrow.  You and your classmates will be critiquing your rough drafts, so it is critical that you bring a hard copy.  If for some reason you don't have it completely finished by tomorrow, still, bring whatever you have written.

--Check the class handouts page if you need digital copies of the handouts from class these past weeks, including the essay grading rubric and the instructions on how to properly cite your sources.

Review of today:
--We sanded our masks till they were smooth and beautiful :)
--Worked some more on our rough drafts.

See you tomorrow!

9/24 HW/Review

Happy Tuesday!  First things first, check out the new additions to the Class Handouts Section to see the  electronic version of
A.  The grading rubric for your essay, both rough draft and final.
B.  The grading rubric for your essay if you choose to do a Challenge Extension Essay (an extra two paragraphs)
C.  A much more simplified version of "How to Cite" for your paper (EVERYONE should take a look at this, as you need to follow these instructions for citation for your final copy.)

HW tonight:  Finish your conclusion of your rough draft.  You will have time tomorrow in class to work on it as well, but our main goal will be to sand and paint our masks :)  Remember...
ROUGH DRAFT DUE THIS THURSDAY.  Everyone has had TONS of class time to work, so there is absolutely no excuse for lateness, unless you speak with me beforehand and explain any extenuating circumstances (illness, travel, etc).

Today in class we had an overview of the grading rubric for the essay, a quick lesson on the three points of an effective conclusion, and independent worktime.

Tomorrow we will be working on our masks for most of class.  Depending on how efficient we work, you might have some time to work on your essay.

9/13 HW/Review

Scholars, your HW this weekend is to read to page 73 of "Mexican Whiteboy" and to annotate. We will begin using the text in class next week, so make sure you are up to date.  This Tuesday during lunch is the last chance to reassess your Sociology quiz.   Look at "reassessment policy" under the class handouts to know what is expected.

Review:  Today in class we
--Had an hour-long student-led and organized debate on the legal drinking age in the US.  Both formats worked very well in each class; good job to the groups that created those debate protocols.  We'll try and integrate these debates into our class perhaps once a month as the year unfolds.
 --Had student pictures taken
--Finished the class with independent work-time.

On Monday I will not be in class; Rachael from College Advising will give a presentation to each class, and then she will meet individually with students while everyone works on completing a project that Rachael will hand out to you about the history of social identities in the US.
 Happy Weekend!

Antiquated word of the week:  "Snoutfair", which, strangely enough, means "an exceedingly good-looking person" in old English.

9/12 HW and Review

HW:  Tonight no homework, except to catch up if you are behind by reading to page 50 of Mexican WhiteBoy, and annotating.  Thank you everyone for your feedback today on how the class is going so far, I will do my best to incorporate it as much as possible. We are always looking to improve as students, teachers, and scholars, and this will be very helpful.

Review:  1st Period:
--Journal on the strengths/weakness of our class and giving Matt feedback
-- Conversation on the video "Princess Boy"
--Discussion on strengths/weaknesses of the conversation
--Small group creations of different debate protocols, including classroom layout, norms of behavior, stages of debate, and form of self-governance.

                2nd Period:

9/11 HW and Review

HW:  Read to page 50 of "Mexican Whiteboy" and annotate.
Review:
Today we remembered the events of 9/11 by watching a clip of how that tragedy unfolded.  Though most of us were not directly affected by the attack, we remember today those who died on that day, and those who were killed in the violence that followed.
Our class content was gender; we watched several more clips investigating the harmful effects of gender stereotyping on both males and females, and had a fishbowl seminar for both genders to explain what they enjoy and what they struggle with given today's societal roles.  We also watched a clip about "My Princess Boy", learning about how gender sometimes does not fit into society's clear-cut category of either "male" or "female".

9/10 HW and Review

Scholars!  Here is your necessary information to complete tonight's mission (Don't forget to reassess your sociology quiz if you are scheduled to, either at 3:30 tomorrow or at the time you arranged with Matt)
HW TONIGHT:  Read to p 30 of Mexican Whiteboy using the annotation method (either a separate page of paper or sticky notes) in which you annotate for:
a.  What are Danny's identities (think gender, race, class, sexuality, able/disabled, etc)
b.  How is he being socialized according to his identities?
Essentially, find examples that answer these questions.  The point of annotating in this way is to help you have textual references that will describe how Danny is being socialized.

Review:  Today we did grade-checks, played a game, did a starter about gender stereotypes, reviewed how to annotate for MWB (see above) and took notes on the gender stereotypes displayed in popular media.

Monday, September 9, 2013

9/9 HW

HW tonight:  Read to page 18 of Mexican Whiteboy
Tomorrow:  I will do individual grade-checks with everyone.  If you check powerschool tonight and have a question about your grade, tomorrow will be the time to speak with me during our check-in.  If you are missing any work, tonight would be a good time to start catching up.  All assignments have a description you can click on in Powerschool if you need to refresh your memory on what the assignment was.

Review:  In class today we
--Did Starter #4 (Do you think racism exists in Durango?),
-- Had a lesson on what makes a good thesis statement (in a nutshell, claim + reason= good thesis)
--Watched a video about NYPD's stop and frisk policy:
Stop and Frisk Policy Secretly Recorded (strong language)
--Had a discussion about the video and completed the White Privilege checklist.

9/6 HW and Review

Fellow citizens...
First, make sure you email me your powerpoint or Prezi as soon as possible if that was the option you chose for the mini-project.
Everyone's homework due Monday is to fill out the "Class Questionnaire" worksheet that you received in class, and to write a one-page journal (typed or handwritten, but hard-copy) answering the question, "How have you been socialized to think about wealth?"
At the end of the journal entry, use the "How to write a thesis" handout to write a thesis asserting whether, after writing the journal entry, you think you have been positively or negatively socialized in this way (interpret positive or negative as you like).
Hand the journal into your wall folder first thing Monday morning.  You do not need to turn in the questionnaire.

Review:  Today we reviewed our Functionalist and Conflict Theory notes, did an economic simulation, watched two videos on wealth and inequality in America:

Wealth Inequality in the US

Interview with a homeless American

These videos are not meant to advance a political view, simply to deliver some sociological date (video #1) and to remind us all that no matter someone's economic status, (rich or poor), they are first and foremost a human being and a fellow citizen, and should be spoken of as such.

Have a good weekend!  See you all Monday :)

9/5 HW and Review

Scholars!  You have NO homework tonight (yay!)  However, I am waiting to receive an emailed version of the media powerpoint from the following people.  If you email it to me by tomorrow, it will not be considered late. As I said in class, I am not formally grading these--however, you DO need to turn it in, or points will be taken off of your Process grade. Check the list and email me your presentation if you are on it, or show it to me in class tomorrow.  If you did a poster presentation and your name is on this list, it means your poster is not in your folder; make sure it is in your folder by tomorrow or it also will be considered late.

9/4 HW and Review

Hi folks,
Your only HW tonight is to finish the Mean Girls handout.  I'll be back in school tomorrow. You will get your quizzes back and we will begin looking at issues of Class as it affects our country as a whole, by examining the debate over raising the minimum wage.  We will also learn about two predominant sociological theories, Functionalism and Conflict Theory, that will help us learn how to examine both conflict and stability within societies.  See you soon!  -matt

9/3 HWReview and Quiz reassesment option

Fellow scholars,
Your homework for tonight is to finish your mini-project.  Remember this should be Beautiful Work.  Full disclosure, you will not be assessed on this mini-project; this is meant to help you solidify and ground your understanding of the basic concepts of Sociology that we have covered thus far.  Your motivation to do well on this project is intrinsic (that is, it comes from within).  For what it is worth, you may be drawing on this work in a few weeks once we begin our masks and our essays.  You also would have the option to turn this mini-project into a Challenge Extension to add on to our final project.  Three of you will be randomly chosen tomorrow to present to class, so be ready to go!

Today in class we:
--Did the quiz if we missed school on Friday and got a brief lecture from Matt about the Cycle of Socialization
--Worked on our mini-projects in class
--Matt explained the reassessment policy; you can read it below or see a copy of it in Class Handouts under 9/3

9th Grade Humanities Reassessment Policy
If you are disappointed in your grade on a test or quiz in this class, you may reassess.  Reassessment is a way for us to master the material if we didn't master it the first time; I reassess students because I believe that a student who does poorly on a quiz or test should have an opportunity to make it up partially. However, in order to avoid encouraging a pattern of not studying the first time around and then just making it up later, here is how the reassessments will work.
   1.  All reassessments unless otherwise noted will be held during Matt's office hours and begin Wednesdays at 3:30 pm in the classroom.  You must confirm with Matt in advance that you will be at office hours at 3:30 to reassess.
  2.  A reassessment unless otherwise noted is a verbal interview in which Matt will quiz you on the material you were initially assessed on.  Matt will first go over the quiz or test with you and ask you to explain how and why you misunderstood the material, and then will ask you questions to determine if you now understand the material.
  3.  The best way to prepare for a reassessment is to study the material that you were given to master the first time around.  Ask questions of your classmates who did well on the test or exam.  Review the incorrect answers and figure out how and why you misunderstood the material.  If the answer is, "I just didn't study", be honest in your reassessment and make sure you have studied the material so you can answer the material questions correctly.
4.  Before you reassess, you must print out or handwrite a paragraph that answers the following questions and turn it into Matt at the start of your reassessment.
    a.  Why do you think you did poorly on this quiz or test? Was it related to your study habits, out-of-school life or issues, or time-management mistakes?
    b.  Are there concrete steps you can take to address the reasons why you did poorly on this exam?  What are they?
   c.  Do you feel that this material could or should have been taught in a way that would better accommodate your learning style?  Do you feel that a learning need (if you are working with ESS) was not addressed in the teaching of this material?  If so, how?

NOTE:  A reassessment will at most win you back 50% of the points that you lost.  So if you scored a 10/20 on a given quiz, the most your score can go up after a reassessment is to a 15/20.  The best policy is for you to prepare and do well the first time.

8/30 HW/Review

Scholars!  Your homework this weekend is to begin working on your mini-project which we began in class today. You chose to do either a poster describing how you have been socialized according to one of your identities, or a powerpoint describing how three internet ads socialize their audience.  You can find the handouts describing those options on the class handouts page under "9/30", both pages are on the link if you scroll down.
DUE Dates:  Your roughdraft for your option of this project is due by the end of class on Tuesday.  You will have half of the class period Tuesday to work on it, but you should spend some time over this weekend getting a good start.  Your FINAL DRAFT is due Wednesday first thing.  I will randomly ask three students to present to the class, so be prepared.

Tip:  Here is an awesome link to a sociology blog.  It is a good additional resource if you want to learn more about sociology as a discipline that affects all areas of our lives.
http://globalsociology.com/2010/08/29/why-is-it-so-important-to-know-how-society-affects-us/

Review:  Today we
--had a talk from Rachael Sands about college advising,
--took a quiz on the Socialization lecture
--Reviewed the Learning Goals sheet, heard example of how Matt was socialized as a male and walked through the Cycle of Socialization progression
--Did a starter exploring if we were Agents or Targets according to our seven social identities
--Began working on our projects.
Happy Labor Day!  Don't forget, we don't have school on Monday.

8/29 HW/Review

Hi scholars!
A reminder that we have a quiz tomorrow on the topics we have covered so far. To prepare, review your sociology lecture notes that you took during the slideshow these past two days.  If you need to see the slideshow again, you can find it here.  You should know basic terms, including the elements of culture, the different types of norms, what sanctions are, and subcultures and countercultures.  It will be a short quiz, only fifteen minutes, unless you have spoken to me and ESS and have gotten permission for extra time.
Tomorrow we will:
--Hear a quick talk from Rachael Sands who guides you in the college admissions project (she is doing this with all Humanities classes this and next week)
--Take the quiz
--Do a starter (#3) on agent and target groups
--Review the learning goals sheet.  I know there was some confusion about the concepts in this handout today, so we will review everything together to make sure we are on the same page.
--Begin a mini-project; you will have a choice of either doing a poster or a powerpoint. You'll learn more about these options tomorrow.

Thank you for your hard work. These texts and concepts can be confusing and challenging, and confusion is an essential step in the learning process.  If you're not confused at some point, you're not challenging yourself.  Hopefully we will clear up some of that confusion tomorrow.  Keep it up :)

8/28; HW/ Review

Scholars!
If you missed yesterday or today's lecture, you can find it here . View it and fill in the blanks on your sociology lecture notes handout.  This would also be good for you to review for our quiz on Friday. It is also listed under class handouts as "Sociology Lecture".
Visual learners, there is a special handout I just uploaded under "class handouts" for you to look at.  It is a good image of all of the terms we have been learning.
Your homework for tonight is to read your Cycles of Socialization reading and annotate it.  Because of the heavy reading load, I'm going to give us all 15 minutes tomorrow to finish the reading in class first thing.
If your beautiful work paragraph was not in your folder today, it means I did not receive it and it is late (automatically 50% off).  Get it to me as soon as you can.
See you tomorrow!  Have a good night.-matt

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

8/27 HW/Review

Humanities Scholars,
Your homework tonight is to finish reading and annotating the "Cultural Diversity" handout that I handed out in class today, all the way to page 69 (the last page of the handout).  Tomorrow we will be:

1.  Going over the reading and answering any questions you may have, and having time to check in with Matt if you want to do a Challenge Extension for the Socialization project.
2.  Quickly reviewing the content from yesterday's lecture.
3.  Learning about what happens when a human grows up without human society and watching a video about children who grow up in the wild.
4.  Finishing the lecture on sociology.
And perhaps one or two other activities, depending on time constraints.

We will have a quiz on the content from today and tomorrow on Friday.  You'll have more information about this quiz tomorrow.

ATTN:  If you have missed class this week, it is your responsibility to look at previous posts to find out your homework, and to turn it in.  Your learning manifesto paragraphs will be waiting for you to pick up and see my comments in your folders tomorrow.
That's all!  Have a good night!-matt

8/26 HW/Review

Tuesday Homework
Hi folks, sorry for not posting this earlier in the evening--your homework is listed as 9/27 under "Class Handouts".  You can either print it out and complete it, or if you don't have a printer, go ahead and answer the questions on a separate piece of paper.

In case you want to review, today we
1.  Finished our learning styles posters (yeah!)
2.  Discussed the meaning of "life's work" and "best self" in small groups.
3.  Had a fishbowl seminar on these topics.

Tomorrow we will display our learning style posters, and begin our Socialization project full-on.  Expect a lesson on how to annotate at Animas, a lecture on Socialization with note-taking, and some in-class reading time in case we finish early.  See you then!-matt

Friday, August 23, 2013

8/23 HW/Review

Humanities Scholars,
We are off to a great start!  We've had lots of energy, thoughtfulness, and participation these first few days.  Your homework for Monday August 26th is to complete your Manifesto about Beautiful Work.  This is a paragraph in which you explain why Beautiful Work is important in your education at Animas and why it is relevant to the rest of your life.  You received a handout describing the assignment in class, and a copy is posted as "Beautiful Work Manifesto Assignment" under our class handouts page.  Check it to make sure you follow all the directions. For this and all other homework, please print out or handwrite your homework and physically bring it to class, unless otherwise specified.  Do not email it unless asked.  Thanks!

In case you want to review what we did today (Friday) we:
     1.  Did a rough draft of our learning style poster
     2.  Did our first peer-graded seminar of the year (yes!), discussing the Beautiful Work reading
     3.  Worked on our final drafts of our learning style poster.

On Monday, we will finish our posters, discuss our homework assignment, and then begin our first major unit of the year, called "Socialization and Identity".  You will learn more about this project on Monday.
    Have a great weekend! ~Matt

8/22 HW and Review

Hey folks,
Welcome to our class DP! You should be checking this daily to make sure you understand our homework, or if you miss class and need to know what we did.

HW due tomorrow:
Read "Beautiful Work" (found on the class handouts sections of this site.)  If you have a printer, print out the article and underline sentences you find interesting.  If you do not have a printer, write down one or two sentences describing your reaction to the article.

Today we:
-- Went over any questions you may have had about the syllabus.
--Did skits about the class code (Be Here Now, Speak the Truth, Risk It)
--Reviewed the concept of multiple intelligences/learning styles and journaled about how you will use your
strengths as revealed by the multiple intelligence test.
--Shared strategies about how to do well in Humanities depending on our learning styles.
--Had an agree/disagree discussion about society's effects on the individual, especially on gender roles. This discussion will tie into our upcoming Socialization project, which we will begin next week.

Our first Friday Funday is tomorrow!  We will do a mini-poster project about our learning styles, learn how to annotate (mark a text), and to have our first Socratic Seminar (I'll explain tomorrow!)  Don't forget that you MUST HAVE a binder with the required dividers by Monday.
See you then-Matt

Sunday, August 4, 2013

Welcome!

Welcome to 9th Grade Humanities at Animas High School!  On our first day of class, you will be completing a list of activities and tasks to orient you to the nuts and bolts of how our classroom operates.  Below I have listed an initial outline of how that first day will look.
Please also take look at the syllabus (listed above in the navigation bar).  Any handouts you receive in class will also be posted on this website under the "class handouts" bar, and all homework assignments will be posted in the form below, daily.

A fundamental expectation of this class is that you (the student) advocate for your needs.  Please see me in person or send me an email if anything on this website is unclear.
Looking forward to meeting you! -Matt

What we will do on our first day of class:

--Seating arrangements (organize yourselves in order of birthdays)
--Class Activities list.  This will take up most of our class time.  You will complete a checklist of activities, from giving me your email address to creating a system of turning in and receiving homework, to learning more about your classmates.
--Close with game.

Homework to be completed and turned by 8/22/13:

1. Read the syllabus with your parents/guardians.  Have both student and parents/guardians sign and date the last page.  List any extra information you would like to me know at the bottom of the last page.  Turn in the last page with the signatures in class tomorrow.

2.  Complete the Multiple Intelligences test and score it using the directions at the bottom of the sheet.  Bring a hard copy to class tomorrow.
